The 26,000 sq. ft. remodel to the 3-story classroom building at St. Pius X High School was scheduled to take place over the summer break while school was not in session. Due to the aggressive schedule it was important to have an open dialogue between the design team, contractors and the Owner. Besides the construction schedule the school offered several challenges including how to incorporate today’s hi-tech infrastructure within a building built in the 1960’s.

The 20,000 sq.ft. addition consisted of a student activity center which included a theatrical stage, gymnasium, weight room and locker rooms. Since the project was funded through bonds the budget was a concern throughout. However, due to the limited cost of change orders and some cost saving design changes that kept the project under budget air conditioning was added to the school’s existing gymnasium.
